For plant aficionados, European Garden in Taman Saujana Hijau is a treasure trove. Here, you can discover an array of gymnosperm plants. These ancient seed-producing plants take you on a journey back in time, offering a glimpse into the flora of bygone eras.

However, a star attraction, especially for those who have a penchant for unique flora, is the original cycas species from Queensland, Australia. Known colloquially as the black boy (Macrozamia moorei), it’s a striking plant. With a crown similar to that of the dates tree and a large, black, beehive-patterned trunk, it stands out as a testament to nature’s eclectic design sensibilities.

If you’re someone who leans towards the therapeutic wonders of plants, then observing the thuja (Thuja orientalis) should be on your to-do list. The thuja’s leaves are nothing short of fascinating. They are flat, and their fan-like arrangement makes them an intriguing sight. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, thuja is steeped in medicinal value. It is one of the 50 types of herbs integral to traditional Chinese medicine. Rich in essential oils, its leaves and seeds contain beneficial constituents like borneol, bornyl acetate, thujone, camphor, and sesquiterpenes.

The English Garden is home to a variety of English plants and flowers.

Discovering Exotic Plants

As I ambled through the paths in English Garden in Taman Saujana Hijau, the first thing to catch my attention was the rows of exotic plants. If you’re a plant lover, you will be as excited as I was to spot the likes of paku gajah (Cycas clivicola), Mexican fern palm (Dioon edule), and the Zululand cycad (Encephalartos ferox). These aren’t your everyday garden varieties but are a testament to the garden’s dedication to offer a unique, international flair.

Cycads

Speaking of cycads, here’s a fascinating tidbit: cycads are dioecious. What this means is that male and female reproductive structures are present on different plants. So, if you ever find yourself wondering about the gender of a cycad, simply wait for it to produce cones. The males sport thin, elongated cones while their female counterparts have shorter, rounded ones, reminiscent of a ball.

Continuing my journey, the foreign aura of the Taman Saujana Hijau became even more palpable. The panorama created by a combination of plants such as the Cook’s pine (Araucaria columnaris), Norfolk Island pine (Araucaria heterophylla), and bunya-bunya (Araucaria bidwilli), all set against a backdrop of vibrant annual flowers, is simply breathtaking.

Norfolk Island Pine: Not-A-Genuine Pine Tree

For those intrigued by the magnificent Norfolk Island pine, here’s an interesting fact: despite its name, it’s not genuinely a pine tree. Sometimes, due to its symmetrical shape, it’s fondly termed the star pine, triangle pine, or even the living Christmas tree.

Rare Plants from Australia

Another standout in the garden is the majestic bunya-bunya (Araucaria bidwilli). This colossal conifer, which hails from Queensland, Australia, holds the title of being the largest in the Araucariaceae family. Not just a visual treat, the Australian aborigines find its seeds and tender leaves quite palatable.

The Beauty of the Orient in Putrajaya: Exploring Taman Saujana Hijau’s Oriental Garden

The Oriental Garden features a variety of Asian plants and flowers, as well as a Chinese pavilion. It is not just an exhibit; it’s an experience that transports you to another world. In Oriental Garden, you’ll discover a beautiful landscape reminiscent of the far-eastern gardens, with all their elegance and serenity.

The Distinguishing Podocarps

Among the fascinating botanical wonders in the Oriental Garden, two standout species often catch the attention of enthusiasts and casual visitors alike: the podo cucur atap (Dacrycarpus imbricatus) and podocarp (Podocarpus costalis). While they may appear similar at first glance, there are distinctive differences between these two.

The Podocarpus costalis holds a special status, as it is listed as a threatened species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This tree’s physical features make it incredibly unique. Small and easily sculpted, it has become a favorite among horticulturists for producing bonsai and topiaries. Such an art form not only helps preserve its beauty but also brings attention to its vulnerable status.

The Gazebo View From The Peak of The Hill

Elevate your journey in Taman Saujana Hijau by visiting the Chinese architecture-inspired gazebo. Perched at the highest point of the garden, it offers a vantage point unlike any other. Here, you can relax and unwind, taking in panoramic views of the Oriental Garden’s unique blend of gymnosperms, bamboo plants, and carefully curated greenery.

The Unique Landscape of Bamboo Amidst Gymnosperms

What makes the Oriental Garden particularly mesmerizing is the co-existence of rows of bamboo plants with lush green gymnosperm trees. This harmonious blend creates a distinct landscape, serving as a testament to the meticulous planning and vision behind Taman Saujana Hijau’s design in Putrajaya.

Damar Minyak, Rich In Herbal Medicine

Another botanical marvel that graces this garden is the Damar minyak (Agathis borneensis). Predominantly found in regions like Borneo, Sumatera, and peninsular Malaysia, this tree has a rich history of utility and significance. Reverently known as the ‘King of Wood’, its branches and twigs contain oil and resin that form the base for herbal medicine. Beyond medicinal applications, the wood and resin of the Damar minyak play pivotal roles in crafting house tools, musical instruments, and even frankincense.
